Branding iron: Professor makes mark on Grant’s legacy

On the evening of Nov. 18, a record number of Lakeway residents gathered at the Lakeway activity center, to hear from guest speaker H.W. Brands.

Brands is a UT professor, author, and historian, who has recently released his 25th book, “Ulysses S. Grant: The Man Who Saved the Union,” which he spoke most about during the dinner speaker series.

“Dr. H.W. Brands, our speaker this evening, is no stranger to Viewpoints,” said Bill Dixon in his introductory speech. “He has appeared before us four times since 2003 and always to rave reviews.”

Brands has written 25 books on American history and biography, and was twice a Pulitzer Prize finalist for biography. Brands received his undergraduate degree in history from Stanford University, and his doctorate from University of Texas.
